The Orifices Talk

I was reminded today of the importance of discussing orifices with my children when Sadie shouted, "Liberty put a pee-pee treat in her nose!" Luckily, it was a rice crispy, not a pee-pee treat (butterscotch chip), but I didn't know that until I got it out with a combination of tweezers and coaxing Libi to blow her nose. I was kicking myself the whole time for not having the holes talk with Liberty sooner. I could see my day morphing from unpack and clean the house to make a bottle for Nathan, find a baby sitter, sit in a waiting room for hours, hold a screaming child down while sadistic doctors and nurses poke her. Amazing how quickly the day-mare melted away when that lovely little rice crispy popped out. We had a good talk about the holes in our bodies and what they're for, and hopefully that's the end of that until Nathan starts to wonder what a button would feel like in his ear.

Mengang

Liberty recently started calling me Mamma instead of Mommy. For some reason, I don't like it; I want to be Mommy. So, when she called me Mamma yesterday, I said, "that's not my name. You call me Mommy."
"No!" she replied, "you Mengang. I call you Mengang, Mommy!"
I sometimes forget how smart she is since she doesn't speak very clearly. She's a crack up. She gives orders, tries to weasel out of trouble by blaming her sisters, makes jokes and uses cute phrases appropriately. Her favorite mode of communication is the full-bore scream. I guess that's just par for the course for #3.
Nathan is another funny kid. He puts up with an awful lot of loving abuse. I can't imagine what it's like when I'm NOT refereeing.

We're learning the difference between boys and girls. Nathan is crawling already at 5 months. He's very aggressive about going after what he wants. All the kids have loved the Johnny Jumper, but the girls never really jumped in it. They would occasionally bounce a little, but they mostly just enjoyed being upright in the middle of the living room. Nathan actually jumps - all the time. He also gets pushed and pulled by the girls. They seem to think it's a playground swing. They get sent to bed if they do it in front of me, but I have a feeling it happens when I'm milking the goat or doing laundry. Like I always say, it's a good thing kids are made of tire rubber.

The Frog Prince

Eve's theater class finally came to an end. I was SO excited to be done with all the running around! When I signed her up for the class, I thought it was going to be one hour a week and she would learn to sing, deliver lines, and do a little acting on stage. Ha Ha Ha! In May she met twice a week, the first week of June was every day. She had no lines on her own, but she did learn several songs, and is much more comfortable with singing. All in all, I figured she might be interested in being in a play when she's older, and I would just write off the time and effort we wasted dragging a 5 year old to all these silly practices. The play was pretty dang cute, and my feelings were confirmed; the older kids really seem to learn some great skills and have a blast. Eve, on the other hand spent 90% of the play doing this:

Considering the dead pan look on her face throughout the play, I figured she'd be more than happy to try something different this fall, but as soon as we got in the car she said, "Mommy, Annie is the next play. I really think I should be in Annie. Don't you think I should be in Annie? I really think it would be good if I was in Annie." What? I don't know, we'll revisit the issue in September...
Sadie got a big laugh from the audience by shouting, "that's silly!" when the frog ate cake with his face.

ICF Picnic

Well, Ben left town again on Sun, and the girls and I went to the Italian Catholic Federation's annual picnic with my parents and sisters. The picnic was great with old-fashioned games for the kids, like egg toss, water balloon toss, tug-of-war and sack races (we were just spectators at the sack race). The food was tastey, the weather balmy, and all the kids were happy and relaxed despite missing Sunday naps.

Libi is really starting to enjoy her brother. When he gets fussy, she does her best to soothe him. This is Sun. morning before church. I was busy doing hair, and Nathan was wailing. I was wondering what calmed him down, until I saw this. I'm sure she shoved his binky in his mouth (and I mean shoved) before she cuddled up with him.

Nathan is such a little mover! He's regularly up on all fours now, and trying to coordinated knee and hand movements. I put him in his swing a couple days ago, then went outside to change the laundry. When I came back, I saw this -

That look - "What? Me?" I guess I really need to buckle him in every time now.
And here he is performing some of his fancy hands and knees work -

OK

I should probably have mentioned I got that little gem in an e-mail. I'm sure it was written either as a joke or by someone on psychotropic drugs. No one's that clueless, right?
